Sustainability

We show the way for local and global sustainable action

Positive action for people and planet

We have developed practical sustainable solutions on our campuses in London, Dubai and Mauritius through our agile approach, setting an example for others.

We share our knowledge to help us and others respond to the urgent challenges of climate change and unfair production and consumption.

Positive action for people and planet

We are a Top 400 university in the world for our overall contribution to United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2023).

We work to celebrate and enhance the critical role that education has in achieving the Goals and we have showed our commitment by signing the SDG Accord.

Advancing sustainability in Dubai

Sustainable, inclusive and healthy food for the UK

We believe social enterprises are key to making UK food more sustainable, inclusive and healthy – so our researchers in London are sharing forward-thinking ideas and good practice. They have visited parliament to speak with policy makers about the benefits too.

Advancing sustainability in Dubai

Our Institute of Sustainable Development in Dubai leads collaborative research with businesses, government and UN agencies. They lead training in meeting the SDGs and build a sustainability mindset in their community. We were proud to host the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference Climate Law event on campus.

Eco-conscious spaces on our Mauritius campus

We recently renovated the Trent Park Learning Block in Mauritius to integrate transformative learning with sustainable practices. This holistic approach to looking after our students and staff’s wellbeing, alongside the natural world is a model for future education spaces.

Our London campus

  • Platinum EcoCampus Accreditation and ISO 14001 Certification from EcoCampus, the Environmental Management System for higher and further education, which recognises our commitment to continuously identify, evaluate and improve our environmental performance
  • Environmental Association of Universities member in the UK
  • Universities Environment Group member in London.

We have developed an inspiring long-term vision for the future development of our London campus and its infrastructure in partnership with space design experts, to help us achieve our Strategy 2031 objectives.

In Dubai and Mauritius, and across our global community, we are equally committed to ensuring healthy and sustainable campuses for our staff, students and wider society.

Our Carbon Management Plan, in partnership with The Energy Consortium sets an example for other universities.

草榴社区 has set out targets in our Strategy 2031 to reduce Carbon Emissions by 50% by 2031 and achieve Net Zero emissions by 2040.

We are powered by 100% clean electricity from zero carbon, nuclear backed sources.

Our Waste Management Strategy helps us to use less and waste less where we can. We send 0% of our waste to landfill.

We have invested heavily in our waste management service to minimise waste and maximise recycling.

We dispose waste items responsibly using our mixed recycling service, which includes the disposal of hazardous products from our labs and studios.

We collect rainwater from the Sheppard Library roof and use it for toilets in the building.

We store harvested rainwater to irrigate the planters around MDX House.

We support the Fresh Air Campus initiative which focuses on understanding the quality of the air and the health of the local community, engaging with local environmental organisations.
